Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters Brings Turn-Based Tactics to the Iconic Tabletop Universe
Fans of the classic tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000 are no strangers to turn-based tactics. When gamers across the world gather around gaming tables with hundreds of hand-painted miniatures and intricate models, what plays out is akin to a real-life battlefield — only it’s overrun with space marines and all manner of dangerous beasts. Over the years the property has gradually grown its influence in the video game world from first-person action games to third-person shooters, real-time strategy, virtual reality, and much more. 
Now, with Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters, <a href="http://www.complexgames.com/">Complex Games </a> brings the series to the resurgent turn-based tactical RPG genre. To learn more about this adaption of Games Workshop’s iconic setting, Intel Gaming Access took some time to chat with Noah Decter-Jackson, CEO and Creative Director at Complex Games.

The Chaos God
“The game is about contending with the outbreak of a plague known as the Bloom, which is unleashed upon a sector of space by the Chaos god Nurgle,” said Noah. “Players take command of a strike force of Grey Knights in the immediate aftermath of a successful but withering campaign. Even though they've suffered heavy losses, and their strike cruiser is badly damaged, investigating this new threat becomes the commander's priority.”
Since this is a top-down view, turn-based tactical RPG, combat is deliberate and methodical. Every choice matters because everything from positioning your characters to which abilities you use could turn the tide of the battle.
“Players are tasked with eliminating each strain of the Bloom, and stopping the spread for good before it reaches the rest of the galaxy,” Noah explained. “This campaign is divided between a series of on-foot, turn-based combat missions where the Grey Knights clash with the colorful forces of Nurgle and a strategic layer where players will manage the spread of the Bloom from aboard their strike cruiser, the Baleful Edict. Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is designed to be a great experience for tactics/strategy players, but also Warhammer 40,000 fans generally. We offer an array of difficulty options that cater for different types of players, so we encourage anyone who fits either description to check the game out.”

Old-school PC gamers might recall Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate was a turn-based strategy PC game from 1998 developed by Random Games Inc., and Noah describes Daemonhunters as a “spiritual successor” with more modern sensibilities inspired by Relic’s Dawn of War series.
Power of the Grey Knights
“As you'd expect from an elite chapter of Space Marines like the Grey Knights, they're less about fighting cautiously and more about getting in the enemy's face,'' detailed Noah. “That's why we've created an intricate combat mechanic called Precision Targeting in Melee – we give players the option to take the forces of Nurgle apart, up close and personal. That means the Grey Knights can target specific body parts on enemies, removing weapon arms or blinding them among many other options that vary depending on the opponent. Performing an execution at close range will give your fellow Grey Knights a boost in battle, so you're incentivized to play offensively, which creates a thrilling moment-to-moment feeling in Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters. At the same time, we've eliminated the randomness that is often associated with ranged attacks in the turn-based tactics genre. The Grey Knights never miss a shot.”
If that sounds overpowered, don’t worry – they’ve made sure to add unpredictable drama to other portions of the game. There is a wide variety of powerful psychic abilities that the Grey Knights can deploy to get an extra edge, but using them increases the probability of Warp Surge events that can boost enemies and wreak havoc on the battlefield. That creates a compelling risk/reward element that‘s definitely tempting to toy with, but can have major consequences if you’re not careful.
“This is a genre often associated with defensive play, and that's just not the way Warhammer 40,000 tabletop players see these powerful soldiers,” said Noah. “So, reframing this genre into a game where players can feel the heft of their units and see the benefits of playing aggressively was a massive priority for us, and getting it right was a major challenge, for sure. We got there, though. Having the Grey Knights at the center of our game helped to solve this, and answered a lot of questions around the game's design – in Warhammer 40,000 lore, all Grey Knights are adept psykers, so it made sense to use their psychic abilities to add an extra dimension to our turn-based tactical combat.”

Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters is set to <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/1611910/Warhammer_40000_Chaos_Gate__Daemonhunters/?msclkid=ca9ec7d2b47311ecbe7013c9040e5007">release for PC on May 5</a> with support for a wide-range of systems thanks to Complex Games’ focus on optimization. After release, they’ll share plans about what’s in store for the future of Daemonhunters and the studio as a whole.
“Our goal now is to establish ourselves as a globally recognized studio, and the release of this game represents a huge moment for us in achieving that,” said Noah.
