GRID Legends is an Intense Racing Game for Newcomers and Series Veterans Alike
There are few names in the world of racing video games as synonymous with quality as Codemasters. Since the late 1980s, the studio has continued to make best-in-class racing titles that range from hardcore simulators to arcade-style excursions. With GRID Legends, it’s bringing the long-running series to a middle ground, offering something for everyone without sacrificing the depth that’s made the series a staple for years. To learn more about the studio’s latest racing entry, Intel Gaming Access spoke with Chris Smith, Creative Director on GRID at Codemasters.

The GRID franchise has been around for a long time and continues to evolve with each new game. This time around, GRID Legends is putting emphasis on its social elements, including cross-platform multiplayer, delivered in the largest GRID ever made. Plus, the story-based campaign mode is leveling-up this time around.
“GRID is attitude,” said Chris. “Think the X Games of motorsport meets Netflix’s Drive to Survive. It’s about the thrill of driving wheel-to-wheel against friends or enemies in all types of vehicles. It’s about moments created in the heat of a race that you talk about for weeks. GRID is motorsport turned up to 11. And GRID Legends specifically is for everyone, from players new to the racing genre to sim racing fans looking for a guilty pleasure.”

GRID Legends offers a no-nonsense way to hop in a car and burn some rubber. Codemasters is increasing the number of cars on each track from 16—the max in GRID 2019—to 22 total players per race. And there are more race types and more things to do overall this time around with the intuitive Race Creator.
“GRID Legends is the largest GRID game we have ever made, with more cars, race modes, locations, and routes,” said Chris. “We also have a massive single player career mode with over 250 races, as well as progression systems for cars and your crew.”

Thriving and Driving
The game’s Driven to Glory story campaign focuses on the previous World Series of races, featuring an episodic structure with objectives to meet in each new event. 
“The modern documentary style has been achieved using live-action footage, on-track captures, and choreographed in-race events,” said Chris. “Our talented cast, led by Ncuti Gatwa from Netflix’s Sex Education, were filmed using virtual production techniques used in Disney’s The Mandalorian with some amazing results.”
The career mode in GRID Legends can be played with friends, and the new ‘hop-in’ feature makes it easier than ever to join races with up to 22 real players at a time and access live events on player-created courses.
“The Race Creator allows players to choose any of the game content to create their events, for example the car class, route, weather, race mode and so on,” said Chris. “We’ve also added a handy ‘Randomize’ button to create even more unique experiences. Any events created can then be hosted online to play with your friends or for other players to ‘hop-in’ to. So if you want to set up a 99-lap challenge around Suzuka racing GT1 monsters, or a classic Mini race around London with ramps and boosts, the choice is entirely yours. There’s a massive number of combinations.”
Since GRID is designed to be a seamless racing game across all platforms, including cross-platform multiplayer, it’s specifically tuned to be played with controllers. However, the team has also taken great care to support racing wheels and other accessories.

One More Lap
“At Codemasters we pride ourselves on the responsiveness of our racing titles, and GRID Legends is no different,” said Chris. “We want the player to have absolute control of their vehicle while racing in stunning environments, so we spent a lot of time optimizing and getting the experience just right for maximum enjoyment.”
Between the massive career mode, tons of unlockables, competitive online multiplayer races for up to 22 players, and the new Race Creator, GRID Legends is loaded with tons of content to keep drivers busy for a long time. But it won’t stop there.
“For GRID Legends, the team is already turning their attention to post-launch service, where we have plans to expand the game and the options in the Race Creator even further,” said Chris. “We are excited to announce more details about the service soon—it’s truly exciting. For Codemasters as a whole, it's still about bringing the best possible racing experiences to our players and fans.”
