As a brand renowned for play, it’s no wonder The LEGO Group has successfully transformed its physical toys into digital games. From the first LEGO games at the dawn of 3D graphics to modern ray-traced renditions of the Scandinavian brick, every step along the way has built a portfolio of entertaining games for all ages.
With dozens of original and licensed LEGO PC games, there’s a wide selection for fans of plastic bricks to enjoy. The most recognizable of these are the open-world games from TT Games, formerly Traveller’s Tales, whose LEGO Star Wars games have been enjoyed by millions of players worldwide.
In celebration of this week’s release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, we’ve rounded up eight of the best LEGO games of all time.
LEGO Island (1997)
The first LEGO PC game set the bar high for what a digital rendition of plastic toys could be. LEGO Island welcomed its players into an open world filled with nearly two dozen cartoonishly animated, fully voiced Island locals and a smorgasbord of pizza delivery, building, and racing activities. Every element laid out by now-extinct developer Mindscape built a foundation for future LEGO games. The racing element carried over into 1999’s LEGO Racers, and the free exploration and interaction was encouraged in later TT Games releases, starting with LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game.

Now old enough to be considered a retro video game, Island made the most out of the hardware of the day to give young players an exciting world, several playable characters, and a mission thwarting the nefarious Brickster. Chasing down the villain on a now-outdated 120 MHz Intel Pentium processor was a new way to play with the Danish toy brand in ‘97. In the 25 years since, dozens of LEGO games have built on the success of LEGO Island to recreate imaginative play with plastic bricks in computer bits.
LEGO Rock Raiders (1999)
Early LEGO games such as LEGO Island and LEGO Chess sampled from existing real-world toys with city, western, and pirate aesthetics. Rock Raiders was instead complemented by its own custom theme of real-world products made specifically to support this real-time strategy game. This blend of a bespoke sci-fi universe and deep gameplay introduced young players to strategy games, a genre long loved by PC gamers.

25 cavern challenges await players, each filled with Energy Crystals to collect, to help get your spaceship’s crew off the planet they crash-landed on. Base-building, squad management, and combat against the fearsome Rock Monsters are all required to achieve victory and earn viewing rights to each mission’s cinematic video. The LEGO Group and their developers proved their sci-fi storytelling chops with Rock Raiders which would later serve another theme released in 1999: Star Wars.
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007)
LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game’s release marked the beginning of the modern era of LEGO video games and development by TT Games, as Traveller’s Tales became in 2005. The first two LEGO Star Wars games were combined into The Complete Saga which spanned the entirety of the franchise’s films at that point. With six episodes each containing six levels, over 120 playable characters, and a plethora of challenges and unlockable content, The Complete Saga offered arguably more content than any LEGO or Star Wars game before it.

Cooperative 3D platforming – which leveraged the abilities of Force users, bounty hunters, Wookiees, droids and more – cemented the playstyle of future LEGO games based on licensed films, novels, and comics. The humorous-but-authentic take on Star Wars proved to be entertaining for both child and adult fans, and its mass appeal led The Complete Saga to become the best-selling Star Wars game (for now). Later LEGO Star Wars games partially covered events of the Clone Wars animated series and Rey Skywalker’s sequel trilogy. Freshly-released LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga includes content from all nine main Star Wars films with updated graphics and gameplay.

LEGO Universe (2010)
Despite the game’s short life, LEGO Universe stands apart from its peers as The LEGO Group’s first massively multiplayer online game. Elements from earlier LEGO games were blended with MMORPG features, such as the ability to build with bricks earned through gameplay à la LEGO Creator, or taming pets for companions as seen in other MMOs.

Nine expansive worlds were filled with baddies to battle and bricks to build with. The final world, added shortly before the game servers’ shutdown in January 2012, was dedicated to the Ninjago theme of toys which still exists today. Universe relied only on original LEGO themes and sought to promote imagination. As a kid-oriented game, online user interaction was balanced with careful moderation to create a safe environment for young internet users.
LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 and Years 5-7 (2010, 2011)

Echoing the style established by TT’s *LEGO Star Wars *games, LEGO Harry Potter gives fans a cheeky, blocky rendition of the Wizarding World to explore. Two games span the books and films with more than enough details to delight the most scrutinous spell-slingers. Hundreds of characters are playable through both games, all of whom communicate and emote with wordless mumbles, grunts, and shouts – similar to the characters in LEGO Star Wars. Players can visit every key location in the Harry Potter series, each with a host of collectibles to discover and Students in Peril to rescue.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings (2012)

Following on from a successful partnership with Warner Bros. for Harry Potter, The LEGO Group produced a collection of Lord of the Rings sets and a video game in 2012. Given the darker source material of the high-fantasy novels and films, LEGO The Lord of the Rings appealed to an older audience with some gruesome scenes tailored to be family-friendly. The open-world Middle Earth setting offers similar gameplay to other TT games, but one key difference edges this game closer to cinematic territory. Instead of the mumbling voiceover from earlier games, the 80+ characters are largely voiced with samples taken directly from the films.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (2017)

By this point, TT Games has their cooperative 3D platforming formula down to a science. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 expands on that formula by hosting a roster of superheroes with more diverse abilities than any previous games. Comics, animation, and Marvel’s cinematic universe fuel the character sheet with favorites like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and lesser-seen character mash-ups like Gwenpool. Some exceptions like the absence of the X-Men make the game just shy of being a complete Marvel character roundup, but nearly 200 playable heroes and villains are sure to satisfy fans’ taste for variety as they fight and fly through 17 different Marvel settings.

LEGO Builder's Journey (2021)
In contrast to the frenetic jumping, hacking, and slashing of youth-oriented platformers, LEGO Builder’s Journey is as much a relaxing digital toy as it is a game. With minimalist aesthetics complemented by ray-traced lighting, this puzzle game is a meditative experience targeted at adults.

This is the first game from The LEGO Group’s in-house developer, Light Brick Studio, and it’s a relatively short journey from start to finish. The narrative focus of the game is the value of play as we age, packaged in a two-hour story. There are no licensed characters, no minifigures even – LEGO Builder’s Journey tells this story through simple bricks.
